Hanoi Transport Corporation and Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) have co-operated on the plan. They have installed sensor systems and provide Internet connection on buses and at bus stations along with the establishment of card issue software and passenger management databases.

Whenever a passenger uses BRT services, they only need to scan the e-ticket, for which the money will be automatically deducted. When the account is out of money, passengers can go to any transaction point or stations to top-up their credit.

Vu Van Vien, head of the Hanoi Department of Transport, an estimated 3,000 e-cards are expected to be issued during the pilot programme.

The e-card model will be implemented widely on the city’s bus system after the pilot programme showed positive results.
