Update news environment protection tax
From August 25, those who do not classify domestic waste at source and don’t use packaging for domestic waste will be fined from VND500,000 to VND1 million.
The nation spent US$5 billion on importing 4.8 million m3 of petroleum during the first half of this year, an increase of 18% in volume and up nearly two fold in value compared to the same period from last year.
The crude oil price in the world market has reached a 14-year high and is nearing $140 per barrel. Experts predict the petrol price may rise to $30,000 per liter if there is no price intervention.
The current tax rate on plastic bags is VND50,000 per kilogram, which, according to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Vo Tuan Nhan, is "not high enough".
The sales of E5 petrol and environmentally friendly plastic bags remain low.
The environmental protection tax on plastic bags are expected to increase from VND30,000-50,000 to VND40,000-200,000 per kilo. The new tax rates would help change consumption habits and offer opportunities to biodegradable bag manufacturers.
