Exhibition “Hoa Mắt”

05 – 25 May 2023, 10 am – 06 pm
Villa Medium, 240B Pasteur, Ward Vo Thi Sau, District 3, HCMC

Thiên Minh – a Vietnamese photographer, well-known for his B&W portrait photography, is launching his first solo exhibition in partnership with Gallery Medium called ‘Hoa Mắt’ at Villa Medium, marking a milestone in his 10-year career as a professional photographer.

The ‘Hoa Mắt’ exhibition is inspired by the multi-dimensionality of art, particularly photography, and explores how we perceive and define beauty through our eyes. The name ‘Hoa Mắt’ combines Thien Minh’s love for nature, represented by “hoa” means ‘flower’, with ‘mắt’ means ‘eyes’, presents the connection to the soul that reflects on its own truths and beauties. Together, the words create a dizzying visual phenomenon, much like the way individual perceive beauty and art. There is no specific or clear view, no definite definition, but only the journey of feeling and vibration within each person’s soul can define their own truth.

The photography exhibition ‘Hoa Mắt’ by Thien Minh will be held from 05.05.2023 to 25.05.2023, at Villa Medium, a part of Gallery Medium, an art and design focused venue created specifically for exhibitions and events. Gallery Medium is a multifaceted contemporary art gallery that blurs the lines between art, design and interiors. Alongside being an online platform, Gallery Medium hosts exhibitions, private views and events, selling art in a curated setting.

07 May – 25 June 2023
Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA)
B1-R3, Royal City
72A Nguyễn Trãi, Thanh Xuân, Hà Nội
Artist: Hải Thanh
Curator: Mai Nguyên Anh

Hai Thanh (b.1972) has an insatiable drive to photograph. For nearly 30 years, documenting and archiving have been a daily practice.

Nine years ago, Hai Thanh, who was always in a constant state of in-betweenness, settled down, had a family, and relocated to an unfamiliar city. A sense of displacement urges him to explore the notion of “home” in such a personal way, which resulted in a thoughtful journey to fatherhood.

Using still images, Hai Thanh’s endeavor provides an appropriate pretext for us to examine a “place” we hold dear, an intimate landscape, a nostalgic moment, a familiar recollection; it was an invitation to gaze both inward and outward. These photographs compose a beautiful tribute to family bonds, with all the joy, complexity and intricacies that they carry.

The exhibition “Place of Belonging” is an event in the framework of Photo Hanoi’23 – International Photography Biennale
