In a café, four characters unintentionally find a reason to meet. They talk, fantasize, reminisce… invisible walls. Who are they, lovers who have loved each other, not loved each other? Are they the past life, the next life of each other, the memories that merge and separate in dreams and conversations? Can stories connect them, will stories separate them, will there be healing?

Featuring a selection from the archives of Veronika Radulovic, this exhibition brings together Trương Tân, Nguyễn Minh Thành and Nguyễn Quang Huy, whose unconventional drawings and paintings, their art performances and installations – the first ever in Vietnam – offered a refreshing new approach to the Vietnamese art world of the 1990s.
The tangible spontaneity, shrewdness and boldness of their art was matched by their materials and working methods. They mainly used traditional Vietnamese paper, brushes and watercolours, hardly anything more. Altogether, their experimentations and aesthetic expressions have made them protagonists of an independent and young art scene that emerged in Hanoi in the early 1990s, and who continue to have wide-reaching influence on Vietnamese contemporary art today.
Tues – Sun 17 Nov – 09 Dec 2022, 11 am – 07 pm
Manzi Exhibition Space
02 ngõ Hàng Bún, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Originated from an unrealized series of installations ten years ago that Phúc had fully formed idea about, ‘no-think’ when comes into being at manzi this month, is an interplay of the physical presence and the re-appearance of what -used -to- exist-and-archived:
A bottle of penicillin filled with tears
A reptile animal
A flying strip of fabric tied with a knot
A painting made of scorched rice
A man running on a blooming field of yellow flowers
A man perching on a loofah pergola
A man lying on a blossom bush
A ring on the floor formed by buffalo dung
Such an overload of visual materials on disparate forms, ‘No-Think’ offers a space crammed full with images. They collide, or more accurately pushing down and simultaneously lifting up, interrupting while harmonizing & backing each other. The audience gets struck by a great amount of visual information and an overwhelming force inherent therein that directly attacks their senses. Though being perceived, this visual data is seemingly unable to be processed, obviously incomprehensible due to its absurdity and lack of coherence.
Rejecting any logical connection or cohesiveness, the visual fragments featuring in ‘No-Think’ are nevertheless authentic and original as Nguyễn Văn Phúc “…did not aim to question their origins, but rather to perceive and keep them in one’s own memory”. As if an effort to catch some random images popping into our heads or to summon fleeting shadows in a dream. From this perspective, the immateriality of our subconscious mind has been materialized in Nguyễn Văn Phúc’s installations, with a distinct structure composed of aggressiveness along with playfulness, roughness mixing into delicacy.
Opening: Nov 18, 04 pm
Exhibition: Nov 18 – 22, 10 am – 07 pm
Fine Art Exhibition House, 16 Ngo Quyen Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi
Everything in this life carries a multitude of ideas that need to change the point of view, we can find in them new layers of meaning. ‘A Shift in Perspective’ is moving continuously, from position to observation method, thereby establishing a thread connecting the inner notion with the outside observation. We look at the tenuous ties that bind us to, and repel us from one’s ideas to another by the transformation itself.
‘A Shift in Perspective’ is a group exhibition, presenting 12 thesis projects, 12 points of view, 12 frames of reference by students majoring in Graphic Design at the London College for Design and Fashion (LCDF), Hanoi. Students look at this notion of a shift as a collective to reflect critically upon the fluctuating timeline of their own and see how they have grown from one point to another in design thinking and methods. Each work is a dialogue of each individual with himself about the changes in perspective.

Three friends – together since the days at Saigon art school, No. 5 Phan Dang Luu. Together they held their first exhibition in 1997. It has been 25 years. A long, long way. Each person has traveled down their own roads of passion and creativity. They gradually matured, stayed persistent with their own practice, and then slowly made their marks on Vietnamese art over the past two decades. Silent footsteps, happy journeys, sad songs, excitement, and anxiety. Then, on these last days of Autumn 2022, the three friends meet again in the same stream, with their latest collections of works.

The geometry and poetic symmetry of Nguyen Trong Minh’s paintings are among the first things that catches one’s eye when seeing his work. Rows of identically dressed groups of student-age men and women are frequently depicted sitting or standing in various meditative or seemingly obedient poses that speak to the acceptance or the successful imposition of a certain uniformity of purpose or mind-set. The clothing worn is most often traditional of the northern region of the country while also prominently featuring school uniforms indicating both a sense of submission or pedagogical intent.
In his Human Chess collection, Minh seems to be evolving into a less austere and didactic style of composition towards something more whimsical and playful. The artist says, “The title of the collection is inspired by the woodcarving art which is found on old Vietnamese communal houses and pagodas in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. This art depicts the common leisure activities of Vietnamese people like playing chess, wrestling, buffalo fighting, tiger hunting, drinking and going to sing at the Mandarin’s house. Among the many types of chess played is human chess where people are used as pieces on the chessboard.” These activities are satirically but affectionately reproduced in many of the paintings of the Human Chess collection.
Piece, You, I
Until Dec 4, 10 am – 08 pm
NGÃ Art Space, TÁCH SPACES, 20 Hai Ba Trung Street, Hanoi
TACH would be honored to present “Piece, I, You” – a solo exhibition by artist Luong Van Viet, curated by Do Tuong Linh, at Nga Art Space this November.
“Piece, I, You” was born from the artist’s concerns through his day-by-day observations. As the artist once confided, “A piece is a disjoint part. You and I, each of us is a piece of family, time, friend or money, but we are also most importantly each a piece of our inner selves, wherein lies our spirituality.”
