Exhibition “The Art of Indigenous Weaving”

Opening (for guest only): Sat 03 Dec 2022, 05 pm – 07 pm
Exhibition: Sat 03 Dec 2022, 07 pm – 09 pm
& Sun 04 Dec 2022, 09 am – 06 pm
Goethe Institut
56-58-60 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội

In the modern world, Vietnamese indigenous weaving traditions struggle to survive in the face of more affordable, factory-produced textiles. Because of this, since establishment, CRAFT LINK has launched different programs/projects that seek to encourage younger generations to pick up the long tradition and learn how the unique patterns and raw materials represent our rich and diverse culture.

In this coming “The Art of Indigenous Weaving” exhibition, we could further explore the beautiful weaving culture in Vietnam through the weaving art of three different ethnic minority groups from the North, the Middle part and the South of Vietnam.

Six artisans from Hmong group (located in Ha Giang Province), Thai group (located in Nghe An Province) and Chau Ma group (located in Lam Dong Province) will be invited to the exhibition to present their weaving culture through their unique weaving demonstration.

Each group has its own weaving practices passed down through generation. Every meticulously handwoven piece of textile has its own function and symbolism, and carries with it the culture and beliefs of the people who make it. This is what makes them even more beautiful, and what makes them a veritable work of art.

Exhibition: Tues – Sun 27 Nov – 11 Dec 2022, 10 am – 06 pm
Weird House

Hamlet 2 Bat Trang village, Gia Lam, Hanoi.

Waiting Room is the final showcase of Month of Arts practice MAP 2022. The exhibition forms part of Month of Arts Practice, abbreviated as MAP, is an annual art project of Heritage Space since 2015.

Month of Arts Practice 2022 (MAP) – the 8th season of MAP continues with the WAR theme. Through discussion and art practice during their residency in Vietnam from October to December, artists together reflect, exchange, and present their premonitions about the wars from the past to present time by different perspectives and minor histories, about unknown entanglements, unnamed truths, and uncertain future in a volatile world. The work results will be presented to the public through the final exhibition – WAITING ROOM, at “Weird House” in Bat Trang village, Hanoi.

There are 10 artists from Germany, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam participating in this project and presenting their works in the exhibition: Oscar Lebeck, Miho Shimizu, Bae Byung Wook, Ryusuke Ito, Sodam Lim, Nguyễn Minh Hoàng, Mi Fa (Lê Vũ Anh Nhi), Jo Ngô (Ngô Kỳ Duyên) & Lê Minh Châu, and Lê Tú Anh. The project also has contributions and mentoring through lectures and exchanges from experts: guest curator Haruka Iharada (居原田遥), Dr. Pamela Nguyen Corey, guest curator Gahee Park, Prof. Dr. Nora Annesley Taylor, guest curator Phương Phan, guest curator Vân Đỗ, guest curator Lee Hangjun, and guest artist Lê Nguyễn Duy Phương.

”Alternate Existence/s”

Opening: Fri 25 Dec 2022, 06 pm – 09 pm
Exhibition: 19 Nov – 10 Dec 2022, 09 am – 08 pm
TOONG
Floor 6-11-14, 198 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, Ward 6, District 3, HCMC

Noirfoto Darkroom-Studio-Gallery is cooperating with Gốc Creation to organize the art photography exhibition “Alternate Existence/s” at Toong 198 Minh Khai. This is a very special show, displaying a variety of photographic works and artifacts from more than 40 years of practice by the fine art photographer and educator Tom Hricko, an American who has found Vietnam as his true home.

Coming to the exhibition, the audience will see international-quality digital prints and analogue prints made with master techniques, including the largest hand-printed photograph in Vietnam with a size of up to 120 x 180 cm.

The 4×5” Polaroids with tonality relationships that cannot exist in this reality make us doubt both the real and the surreal… Multiple exposure photos with delicate objects placement and lighting captured the movement of time in contemplative still image space. Synthetic landscapes take the viewers into a parallel world and everyday scenes seen through the eyes of the photographer become a veil of incredible colors, covering the portal to the unknown… are all presented in the exhibition that reflects Tom Hricko’s 40 years of practice.

In addition, the exhibition also features installation art and displays interesting and valuable documents about the author that also reflects the history of photography from the 70s to the present – from when there was only analogue and darkroom photography until the digital camera appeared and rapidly developed.

Don’t Call It Art

19 Nov – 31 Dec 2022
Mơ Art Space
B3 Floor, no. 136 Hang Trong Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

“I could not imagine then that some of these photos would become the only documentation, for example, of the first stirrings of a performance art scene in Vietnam. Now, 25 years later in Germany – as an observer or a temporary visitor at best, who gleans news about Vietnam’s well-connected international art scene from daily social network chats with friends there – all these works and photos appear to me in quite a different light. They are no longer just gifts, pictures forgotten or discarded as worthless, but rather artworks that have written contemporary history. They had once been a provocative force in their time and place. Here today, this force may seem spent. But to me, now more than ever, it seems as if the artists presented in this book, with their radical stances, were far ahead of their time. Perhaps that is precisely why they fell by the wayside. They became legends before their work could become a permanent and officially recognized part of Vietnam’s art.”

Artists: Nguyễn Minh Thành, Nguyễn Quang Huy, Trương Tân
Featuring artwork from Veroninka Radulovic’s archive
The exhibited pieces were created during the 1990s – a period of significance

Documentary Exhibition: Repurposing Industrial Heritage

Opening: Nov 18, 03 pm
Exhibition: Nov 18 – Dec 11
282 Workshop, 156 Phu Vien, Bo De, Long Bien District, Hanoi

Following the series of events “Repurposing Industrial Heritage 2022 – Innovation & Sustainability”, as part of the EUNIC project “Repurposing Industrial Heritage”, the “Repurposing Industrial Heritage” exhibition seeks to provide perspectives on the possibilities of transforming industrial facilities by presenting examples of industrial heritage transformation in countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom that are at the forefront of transformation trends in Europe. As a result, it raises the question of “what future is there for industrial production facilities in Hanoi in light of the city’s official decision to relocate 09 old industrial facilities with significant cultural and historical values”.

Through this exhibition, we hope the community will gain an objective understanding of industrial heritage value, as well as practical and theoretical evidence for urban reconstruction based on successful transformations of industrial heritage throughout the world.

Art for You 15th Edition

01 – 06 Dec 2022, 09:30 am – 08 pm
Manzi Art Space
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

It feels a phenomenal achievement to have made it to the end of 2022, just 8 months ago Vietnam had still not opened up to travel and tourism and most of the country was still observing various forms of social distancing.

These past two years have seen a dramatic impact on the creative industries and here they are still not fully recovered from the after effects it has bought. Artists, and the spaces that house them – galleries, studios, community art spaces – have been adversely affected by even greater cuts in funding and financial support.

Over the past two years everyone has turned to the creative endeavours of artists to bring us joy and to make sense of life. Art moves people, it brings hope, curiosity and aspiration.

Art For You, the affordable art fair organised by Manzi Art Space and Work Room Four is back to Hanoi this December with its 15th edition. It is at this time more important than ever to consider how you can support your local artistic community by being a patron of the arts, no matter how small. We hope you consider what an impact buying art from local practitioners can have.

Exhibition: “Human Chess”

Opening: Fri 18 Nov 2022, 06 pm – 09 pm
Exhibition: 18 Nov – 07 Dec 2022
Craig Thomas Gallery
27(i) Trần Nhật Duật, Tân Định Ward, District 1, HCMC

The geometry and poetic symmetry of Nguyen Trong Minh’s paintings are among the first things that catches one’s eye when seeing his work. Rows of identically dressed groups of student-age men and women are frequently depicted sitting or standing in various meditative or seemingly obedient poses that speak to the acceptance or the successful imposition of a certain uniformity of purpose or mind-set. The clothing worn is most often traditional of the northern region of the country while also prominently featuring school uniforms indicating both a sense of submission or pedagogical intent.

In his Human Chess collection, Minh seems to be evolving into a less austere and didactic style of composition towards something more whimsical and playful. The artist says, “The title of the collection is inspired by the woodcarving art which is found on old Vietnamese communal houses and pagodas in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. This art depicts the common leisure activities of Vietnamese people like playing chess, wrestling, buffalo fighting, tiger hunting, drinking and going to sing at the Mandarin’s house. Among the many types of chess played is human chess where people are used as pieces on the chessboard.” These activities are satirically but affectionately reproduced in many of the paintings of the Human Chess collection.

NGÃ Art Space, TÁCH SPACES, 20 Hai Ba Trung Street, Hanoi

TACH would be honored to present “Piece, I, You” – a solo exhibition by artist Luong Van Viet, curated by Do Tuong Linh, at Nga Art Space this November.

“Piece, I, You” was born from the artist’s concerns through his day-by-day observations. As the artist once confided, “A piece is a disjoint part. You and I, each of us is a piece of family, time, friend or money, but we are also most importantly each a piece of our inner selves, wherein lies our spirituality.”

12 Nov – 03 Dec 2022, 10 am – 07 pm
Hanoi Studio Gallery
23-25 Mạc Đĩnh Chi, Trúc Bạch, Ba Đình, Hà Nội

Three friends – together since the days at Saigon art school, No. 5 Phan Dang Luu. Together they held their first exhibition in 1997. It has been 25 years. A long, long way. Each person has traveled down their own roads of passion and creativity. They gradually matured, stayed persistent with their own practice, and then slowly made their marks on Vietnamese art over the past two decades. Silent footsteps, happy journeys, sad songs, excitement, and anxiety. Then, on these last days of Autumn 2022, the three friends meet again in the same stream, with their latest collections of works.

”no-think”

Tues – Sun 17 Nov – 09 Dec 2022, 11 am – 07 pm
Manzi Exhibition Space
02 ngõ Hàng Bún, Ba Đình, Hà Nội

Originated from an unrealized series of installations ten years ago that Phúc had fully formed idea about, ‘no-think’ when comes into being at manzi this month, is an interplay of the physical presence and the re-appearance of what -used -to- exist-and-archived:
A bottle of penicillin filled with tears
A reptile animal
A flying strip of fabric tied with a knot
A painting made of scorched rice
A man running on a blooming field of yellow flowers
A man perching on a loofah pergola
A man lying on a blossom bush
A ring on the floor formed by buffalo dung

Such an overload of visual materials on disparate forms, ‘No-Think’ offers a space crammed full with images. They collide, or more accurately pushing down and simultaneously lifting up, interrupting while harmonizing & backing each other. The audience gets struck by a great amount of visual information and an overwhelming force inherent therein that directly attacks their senses. Though being perceived, this visual data is seemingly unable to be processed, obviously incomprehensible due to its absurdity and lack of coherence.

Rejecting any logical connection or cohesiveness, the visual fragments featuring in ‘No-Think’ are nevertheless authentic and original as Nguyễn Văn Phúc “…did not aim to question their origins, but rather to perceive and keep them in one’s own memory”. As if an effort to catch some random images popping into our heads or to summon fleeting shadows in a dream. From this perspective, the immateriality of our subconscious mind has been materialized in Nguyễn Văn Phúc’s installations, with a distinct structure composed of aggressiveness along with playfulness, roughness mixing into delicacy.

“No-Think” marks an end of twelve-year -(half) absence of Phuc from the local art scene and excitingly opens up a brand new chapter of his art practice.
