Piece, You, I
05 Nov – 04 Dec 2022, 10 am – 08 pm
NGÃ Art Space, TÁCH SPACES
20 Hai Bà Trưng, Hoàn Kiếm
TACH would be honored to present “Piece, I, You” – a solo exhibition by artist Luong Van Viet, curated by Do Tuong Linh, at Nga Art Space this November.
“Piece, I, You” was born from the artist’s concerns through his day-by-day observations. As the artist once confided, “A piece is a disjoint part. You and I, each of us is a piece of family, time, friend or money, but we are also most importantly each a piece of our inner selves, wherein lies our spirituality.”
The works of “Piece, Me, You” re-contextualize the space in which they are placed. They invaded the space and rearranged their order. They question the viewer’s existence and the role of architecture in the exhibition as a whole. Above all, time appears to play a significant role; not only for the changing of light setting on all works from different angles but also because the viewers are required their patience and time for an immersive experience. This may just be tranquility, what we need to locate the pieces inside our very own selves.
““Piece, Me, You” invites you to creep into the space and experience it to the fullest with every sense at different times” – quoted from Do Tuong Linh’s curatorial text for the exhibition.
Luong Van Viet (b. 1977) graduated from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts with a specialisation in sculpting. He belongs to a generation of young sculptors who are always eager to push boundaries and discover new expressional materials, with his own favourites being metals such as iron or copper.

Complex 01
No. 29 Lane 31 Alley 167 Tay Son Street, Quang Trung Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi
Architect Nguyễn Hà & artist Trần Thảo Miên joined the Creativity Challenge Playground with the light installation project titled THAN THỞ (lit. BREATHING COAL), using coal to tell the tale of light, while also exploring the techniques of using dó paper in making Mid-Autumn Festival folk toys to realise their work. Coal is a mysterious fossil fuel with a highly intricate inner contradiction as a substance that both fuels and destroys the living environment. This material represents darkness, mystery and million-year-old life. With its high density and unpredictable shape, this has been a challenge for the team on their way to the finish line, both in terms of technique and aesthetics.
Joining the Creativity Challenge Playground 2022, the duo hopes that their idea could be a suggestion for young creatives. With traditional materials and techniques, their product will open up new pathways with folk toys as the starting point. How did the journey of the coal pieces begin, how has the project progressed, and how did the pair of artists address the challenges… all will be discussed in the talk this November 11. Register now to join the pair at the event!

Exhibition “In the House On the Street”
07 – 13 Nov 2022, 09 am – 08 pm
Complex 01
No. 29 Lane 31 Alley 167 Tay Son Street, Quang Trung Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi
Are you curious what little things create the “uniqueness” of Hanoi? VFCD invites you to visit a “mini” capital city in an exhibition space rich in culture and history of “Trong Nhà Ngoài Phố”.
“Trong Nhà Ngoài Phố” (“In the House, On the Street”) is an exhibition co-organized by a group of Design Studies students from RMIT University. Executing from the contributions of 7 students with 7 themes and 7 different art styles, the exhibition hopes to give participants a multi-dimensional perspective, yet contains a strong connection to history, culture, people, and the city of Hanoi.
The artworks presented in the exhibition are:
– Artwork 1: Giao is a project to show tourists and the young generation the history of alleys in Hanoi Old Quarter through an interactive exhibition and give a different point of view about life in tiny alleys, behind what is often considered the uniqueness of Hanoi, raise awareness about the problem of local people with low quality living conditions, therefore can look for a solution to preserve culture in the Old Quarter without giving people inconvenience. Giao project brings out image of the meeting between modern people and buildings of the past, all of that happening on every crossing street in the Old Quarter.
– Artwork 2: “Has the image of flower peddlers become a “too ordinary to notice” part of the city?”
Rising from that question, “Vườn” is an event aiming at embracing the rustic images of flower vendors – the ones who adorn the city scene with various colors from the “moving garden” behind their backs throughout many developing vicissitudes of Hanoi city. Besides the wish of raising awareness about the lower-class manual workers in general and the flower vendors in particular, the author hopes the event can make participants more or less gradually pay more attention to the idyllic simple beauties that “colorize” their own daily lives.
– Artwork 3: The collective living quarter, for many people, is not only a historical witness or an architectural trademark of the period, but also contains beautiful memories. For this reason, the project “Tập Thể” aims to recreate the stories associated with these buildings, create a “land of memories” for audiences to immerse themselves in and explore.
Besides telling stories, we hope that the project is also an opportunity for the public, particularly young people, to better understand the life behind the walls of the collective quarter. Therefore, they will slowly give more attention to a lifestyle, a culture that gradually disappears.
– Artwork 4: Inspired by the 3D Virtual Exhibition “Bao vat quoc gia” of the National Museum of History, “Kho bau quoc gia” (English name: “National Treasures”) is a project that by digitizing Vietnam’s treasures, encourages people who are passionate about cultural preservation, and who want to invest in the digital assets to invest in the Museum’s fund via purchasing digitized items. The project’s primary goal is to help the National Museum of History to operate independently without economic support from any private or Government organization so that the Museum can easily implement future projects and help the preservation of Vietnamese history to develop rapidly.
– Artwork 5: Project Mời is an event that bring the opportunity for people to experience the essence in Vietnamese cuisine as well as the sophisticated culture around the subject. Through two main topics: Combinations in Vietnamese cuisine & Dinning etiquette, the project put history culture in the modern setting with the aim to tribute the tradition beauty. From there, Mời hopes to raise awareness of the current generations about how they are forming Vietnamese culture in the present & the upcoming future.
– Artwork 6: ‘Chơi Cờ’ is an interactive event that aims to introduce the culture of Cờ Vỉa (playing chess on the streets) and raise awareness about the sustainability of positive street activities in Hanoi.
The project focuses on the valuable chess playing culture that represents a part of the city’s image. ‘Chơi Cờ’ event hopes to bring Cờ Vỉa culture closer to the youth, and to create a mutual space where everyone can experience interesting activities and gain more understanding of the contemporary cultures and their values to the city and its communities.
– Artwork 7: Referring to Hanoi, one must mention “Ho Guom”. A place with many historical and cultural values, a place associated with Hanoi people
Inspired by the legend that create the name of the lake, “Legend of Sword Return”, I want to recreate that story with the help of modern technology, to help us all imagine the famous story that has been passed down by word of mouth for generations.

Exhibition “Inside the Garden”
The Muse Artspace, 47 Trang Tien Street
This lacquer painting series “Inside the Garden” is a project starting from early 2019. Artist Vu Van Tich once told us that 3-years is the minimum period that he needs to do preparation, due to the intricacies required in lacquer techniques. Perfecting this artistic medium can be challenging, even with years of experience. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the perseverance driven by passion and discipline of the artist. We have had many discussions regarding the essential techniques and unique values of lacquer – a material that’s mentioned in the book The Artistic Capital of Vietnamese Nation.
Van Tich often concerned himself with the creative directions of lacquer painting. He began by spending 10 years working on simple topics that stem from personal perspectives. The level of sophistication of these paintings is the direct result of Tich’s efforts in the early days.
The exhibition “Inside the Garden” includes 20 artworks that share a coherent composition rhythm. Two paintings, Inside the Garden and Spring is Here, are scaled up to 1,6 meters, depicting the romantic floral scenery of the Northwest region in Vietnam. Other paintings such as Purple Cactus, Wind Day, or Night focus on the elegant beauty, and the different states and characteristics of plants in the garden.
Having a cold, gloomy background, the painting Late Afternoon highlights the red-orange hues of the flower bushes. The foliages lurk behind a mysterious night. The painting shines a light on the distant memories that are hidden deep within.
Meanwhile, the Golden Mai directly took inspiration from the artist’s personal event. He applied thin layers of multi-tone purple on the surface, and powdered them with reflective silver/gold leaves, producing a clear and vast setting. By using fine silver powder, painting through multi-layer, combining three shades of red, extracted from Cinabrio minerals, fusing artistic quirks such as inverting contrasting spaces, and employing symbolic language, Van Tich has constructed a vibrant and vivacious garden.
Ever since the first professors of the Indochina Fine Arts College introduced lacquer as an artistic medium to Vietnam, Vietnamese lacquer painting has only gone through less than 100 years of development.
Nonetheless, it has shortly become a prominent element in Vietnamese art culture. Concerning other materials, lacquer painting has proven difficult to work with. It has various grinding and tempering stages, while other factors, including humidity and weather conditions, can greatly influence the outcome. Materials utilized in lacquer paintings are natural ingredients, namely lacquer, Son pigment, gold, silver, nacre, eggshell, mussel shell, etc.
Currently, Van Tich can apply hundreds of substances within the process of composing a lacquer artwork. Regardless, the ultimate factor that constitutes a profound artwork lies not within the structure, but in the spectrum of the artist’s spirit. Therefore, The Muse Artspace proudly presents Van Tich along with the exhibition “Inside the Garden”. May his spirit guide us amid these whimsical and poetic moments.
