Tran Quoc Tuan, vice president of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), said at present the VFF have received no announcements regarding the AFF’s decision to delay the competition, therefore the tournament will go ahead as scheduled.

The AFF Cup 2020’s preliminary round is set to get underway in October, with the final round taking place between November 23 and December 31.

Despite the AFF Cup facing no delay, the second qualifying round in the Asian region for the 2022 World Cup has been pushed back from March and April to October and November due to fears surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Following the World Cup qualifying matches, the region’s football teams will only have 10 days to prepare for the AFF Cup 2020.

The tournament will be a significant occasion for the nation, with the Vietnamese men’s national football team keen to defend their status as current AFF Cup champions following their win at the previous competition in 2018.

Led by head coach Park Hang-seo, the team are aiming to win the trophy once more, making history in the process by winning back-to-back championship titles. VOV
