Commentator Quang Tung confidently predicts that Vietnam’s national football team will secure a narrow 1-0 victory over the Philippines, advancing early to the 2024 ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup) semifinals.
Assessing Vietnam’s two victories over Laos and Indonesia in the group stage, commentator Quang Tung said: “With the dense match schedule and varying opponents, especially with the semifinals being more challenging, Coach Kim Sang Sik’s strategy of rotating players has been relatively reasonable, as reflected in the results."
However, he noted: “I still feel Vietnam hasn’t solidified certain positions, particularly the midfield roles of Hoang Duc and Quang Hai, which remain undefined. Quang Hai is less effective playing deep, while Hoang Duc hasn’t fully excelled in a more advanced role.”
Quang Tung suggested that Coach Kim Sang Sik may be experimenting and waiting to test Nguyen Xuan Son in midfield, but clarity in positioning is essential for optimal performance.
Quang Tung analyzed the upcoming match: “Although Vietnam is rated higher, the Philippines, having drawn against Myanmar and Laos, should not be underestimated. Vietnam faces challenges due to the demanding schedule, transitioning from cold to hot climates, and the squad’s lack of young players. Additionally, the match will be played on artificial turf, which can affect performance."
He also highlighted the Philippines’ strengths: “Their quality isn’t exceptional, but they demonstrated good stamina in the second half against Laos. Many mid-tier teams in this year’s ASEAN Cup have improved, maintaining high intensity for extended periods. The Philippines, in a must-win situation, will likely play with nothing to lose.”
Quang Tung emphasized the need for Vietnam to approach the match wisely: “Vietnam needs a full three points, but we also have the fallback option of playing Myanmar at home. Therefore, it’s essential to play smartly, drawing out the opponent's weaknesses and responding with experience and composure."
He added: “Vietnam doesn’t need to play at a high intensity. Instead, the team should adopt a more reactive approach, defending and countering when opportunities arise. This strategy allows Vietnam to control the game while conserving energy for future matches.”
Quang Tung is optimistic about Vietnam’s chances, predicting a 1-0 victory: “A result like the 1-0 win against Indonesia is sufficient and keeps the team on track to secure the top spot in the group.”
Coach Kim Sang Sik tests new players in Vietnam’s clash with the Philippines
Head coach Kim Sang Sik is expected to continue rotating Vietnam’s lineup while aiming for a victory against the Philippines to secure an early ticket to the 2024 ASEAN Cup semifinals.
Coach Kim Sang Sik has yet to field his strongest lineup in the first two ASEAN Cup matches against Laos and Indonesia, opponents considered less formidable.
Several players, including Dinh Thanh Binh, Nguyen Thanh Binh, Ngoc Quang, Viet Anh, and Thanh Long, have yet to feature in the tournament.
With Vietnam already securing two wins and needing only two more points from the remaining matches to top Group B, Coach Kim is likely to use the match against the Philippines as an opportunity to test new players.
Although playing on home turf, the Philippines is unlikely to pose a significant threat to Vietnam, making squad rotations a logical decision.
Among the players who haven’t played yet (except goalkeeper Dinh Trieu, who is unlikely to start), Coach Kim is expected to focus on experimenting with the midfield and defense.
In the match against Indonesia, Duy Manh was rested. Against the Philippines, the experienced center-back is expected to return, partnering with Thanh Binh and Viet Anh, replacing veterans Thanh Chung and Bui Tien Dung, who started both previous matches.
On the left flank, Van Khang could be given a chance to build chemistry with his teammates, while Van Thanh might take charge on the right.
In midfield, Quang Hai, Hoang Duc, and Thanh Long are likely to start. Coach Kim is expected to retain the veteran duo of Quang Hai and Hoang Duc to ensure stability and support for Thanh Long, who may make his first start.
In attack, Tuan Hai and Vi Hao are the likely choices to replace Tien Linh, Hai Long, and Van Toan, with further changes depending on the game’s flow and scoreline.
The goalkeeping position is expected to remain in the hands of Nguyen Filip, barring a surprise move to field Dinh Trieu.
