A rescuer search for flood victims in northern Lao Cai province. At least 7 gold miners died because of flood and landslide last weekends in the province.

Earlier, two had been reported dead in the incident, which occurred in early Saturday morning in the exploitation site of Vang Nhan Company in Ma Sa Phin, Nam Xay Commune.

The floods swept away two workers and injured four.

The bodies of the two missing victims, 39 and 40 years old, were later found in a local stream and were handed over to their families.

The four injured workers were transferred to medical establishments, but they had not sustained serious injuries.

On August 23, the bodies of five other miners were found. All of the victims were residents of Cam Con commune in Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province, aged 17 to 34 years old.

Some local newspapers on August 28 reported that the number of victims were 18 people, much higher than the local government’s  report.

Chairman of Lao Cai province Dang Xuan Phong confirmed that the information provided by the local authorities was accurate and they had not hidden information about the number of deaths.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has asked Lao Cai province to clarify the information and urgently implement search and rescue tasks and support the families of victims.

Dianmu, the third of its kind to batter Vietnam this year, swept through the northern provinces over the weekend after making landfall on Friday.

Ma Sa Phin hamlet is the most remote area of Nam Xay Commune. It is among six hamlets that continue to be isolated from other parts of the commune by floods.

An earlier report by the office of the central steering committee for disaster prevention said seven people were killed, two were missing and eight were injured in the storm.
