The information was announced at a meeting on hydro-meteorological forecasting for disaster prevention and control in 2019held by the Vietnam Meteorology and Hydrology Administration (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) on March 22.
Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that the weather and hydrological situation are anticipated to see abnormal developments this year.
“About 10-12 storms and tropical depressions are likely to take shape in the East Sea region in the 2019 stormy season, including four to five storms projected to directly hit the mainland with the focus in the Central region in the second half of 2019,” Lam said.
In addition, Lam said that hot weather is likely to appear earlier in the Northwest and Central regions, while the Southeast region will witness many hot and sunny days in late March and April.
Heat waves are predicted to affect the Northwest region in April and May, the Northeast region from May to June, and the North and Central regions from May to August.
Meanwhile, high tides will occur during the first weeks of October, November and December in the Southern coastal region, Lam noted.
“The Central region is expected to face serious coastal erosion due to large waves in the Northeast monsoon combined with high tides,” Lam said.
