Instead of arranging food on standard banquet tables, the family placed dozens of colorful plastic basins filled with dishes onto the surface of a large fish pond, allowing them to drift around guests like a homemade conveyor belt.

The short video, shared online just days after the gathering, quickly exploded across social media and attracted more than 11 million views.

Many viewers compared the setup to a “homemade conveyor belt hotpot restaurant” and praised the creativity and festive spirit of the Mekong Delta family.

A backyard fish pond turned into a dining table

According to Le Thi Ngoc Yen, who uploaded the video, the memorial gathering was organized by her parents, Mr. Hien and Mrs. Kieu.

The family first prepared a vegetarian offering meal in the morning to honor their ancestors and welcome relatives.

Later that evening, they hosted a larger feast for neighbors and friends.

Before the event, Mr. Hien carefully cleaned the ornamental fish pond in front of the house and replaced all the water.

To create the floating “conveyor belt” effect, he installed a water motor that generated a gentle current around the pond.

The colorful basins were newly purchased and thoroughly cleaned before use.

He also attached foam supports underneath each basin so they could float steadily on the water without tipping over.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Kieu lined the basins with freshly washed banana leaves to make the presentation both hygienic and visually appealing.

The feast included grilled chicken, grilled fish, beef salad, grilled oysters with scallion oil, boiled snails and various tropical fruits from the family’s garden.

The chicken and fish were also raised at home.

A lively Mekong Delta atmosphere

Yen said the floating feast required much more preparation than a traditional party, but everyone enjoyed the process.

“My father wanted the guests to feel surprised and more excited during the meal,” she said.

Each dish was prepared in four or five separate portions and arranged alternately along the floating line so guests would not need to wait long to grab their favorite foods again.

Around 50 guests sat in a circle surrounding the fish pond.

Whenever someone wanted a dish, they simply stopped a floating basin and picked up the food before letting it drift away again.

“If someone wanted to eat longer or take more food, they could just hold the basin in place,” Yen said.

Questions about hygiene and safety

After the video spread online, some social media users expressed concern that the floating food containers could tip over in the water.

However, Yen said the family had carefully calculated the balance beforehand and no accidents occurred during the party.

Others questioned the hygiene of placing food near pond water.

Yen explained that the pond water had been completely replaced before the gathering and that the slight green color came from fish swimming underneath.

She also noted that all dishes were placed separately inside trays and never came into direct contact with the water.

According to her, the moving water even helped keep the food cool and fresh for longer.

Guests at the party reportedly reacted with excitement and curiosity.

“Many people walked in and immediately said ‘wow,’” Yen recalled. “Some kept filming videos and taking photos, while others even made video calls to show relatives right away. The atmosphere was joyful and lively in a very typical Mekong Delta way.”

By the end of the evening, nearly all the food had been finished.

Yen said her family never expected the video to attract such enormous attention online.

She explained that she usually uses TikTok simply to post entertaining clips, and her mother had only asked her to record a few videos as a fun family keepsake.
