Recent floods have left 24 dead, 16 injures and losses of VND783 billion (USD37.2 million) in the central and Central Highlands regions according to the Department of Disaster Prevention in the central and Central Highlands regions.
According to a report released Monday by the department, heavy rains which lasted from December 11-16 destroyed and swept away 332 local houses, including 267 houses in Binh Dinh Province. 118 houses were damaged, 117,035 submerged and 5,892 households evacuated to avoid the floods.
Floods have so far damaged 19,128 hectares of rice and 9,806 hectares of other crops. 3,778 hectares of perennial trees were also damaged. Roads, drains and dykes were also damaged by heavy rains.
Localities in the region estimate VND783 billion in damage caused by the floods. Among those, Ninh Thuan Province posted losses of VND300 billion, followed by Khanh Hoa Province with 235 billion, Thua Thien-Hue VND81 billion, Phu Yen with 74 billion and Gia Lai with VND73 billion.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts river levels from Thua Thien-Hue to Quang Ngai will continue to fall.
