A farmer in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has succeeded in training his snakeheads to jump high out of water. His fish have attracted many visitors.

Snakehead in Tin's pond can leap to snatch their food

Le Trung Tin in Binh Thuy Ward, Can Tho City, has been breeding around 20,000 snakeheads for nearly four months.

Tin, who has 20-year experience in breeding this kind of fish, said that he spent a lot of time training the fish.

Initially, he gave them fresh feed, but later, he replaced with processed feed to encourage them to jump out of the water. Gradually, it has formed a habit for them to “fly” out of the water by up to 40-50 cm to take their food, with viewers enjoying the performance.

Mr. Le Trung Tin

“Unlike other snakeheads which often dive deep underwater, my fish leap from the water to snatch their food", Tin said.

He added that previously he planned to sell the fish before the Tet Holiday to earn around 200 million (USD9,500), giving him profits of some VND90 million. But he now has decided to keep part of the fish as tourist attraction. The average weight of the fish is between 300 grams and 700 grams.

Tin has also sold more fruits in his garden like papaya and guava, helping to improve his family's income when visitors come to enjoy his fish show.
