Leaders of Cambodia and Russia, as well as those of foreign parties have sent their condolences to leaders of the Vietnamese Party, State, Government, people and family of Do Muoi over the former Party chief’s passing away.

More than 1.500 delegations totaling over 50,000 people and more than 100 diplomatic delegations had paid their last respect to Do Muoi in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In his message, Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni described the deceased as an outstanding leader who had made active contributions to the national construction and development of Vietnam. His passing away is a great loss to the Vietnamese nation and people, the monarch said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Cambodian People’s Party Hun Sen also expressed his grief at the news of the passing away of Do Muoi. The Cambodian leader called Do Muoi a heroic leader who worked untiringly for the revolutionary cause of the Vietnamese Party as well as the national reconstruction and development. The deceased’s whole-hearted services to Vietnam will surely be remembered, Hun Sen affirmed.

For his part, Russian Prime Minister and head of the United Russia political party in Russia Dmitry Medvedev described Do Muoi as an outstanding politician of Vietnam who was always associated with the struggle for national independence, construction and development of the country. He highlighted that the deceased had made great contributions to the consolidation of the Russisa – Vietnam relations, and stressed that Russia will forever remember Do Muoi as a good friend of his country.

Besides, leaders of many political parties in India, Urugay, Turkey, Republic of Korea, Portugal and Brazil have also sent their condolences to Vietnamese leaders over the passing of Do Muoi.

According to the organizing board of the state funeral for Do Muoi, by 5:00pm of October 6, more than 1.500 delegations totaling over 50,000 people and more than 100 diplomatic delegations had paid their last respect to Do Muoi in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The respect-paying service for Do Muoi will continue until 7:30am of October 7, a memory service for him will be held at 9:00am the same day in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, while the burial service will take place at 1:00pm at his home village on the outskirts of Hanoi.

Foreign delegations pay last respect to former Party chief Do Muoi

Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith shares his sympathy to the loss of former Party leader Do Muoi's family at the funeral. 

Many delegations of foreign countries and international organizations on October 6 paid their last respect to Do Muoi, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, who passed away on October 1.

Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, who is also a Politburo member, led a delegation of the country to the funeral for the Vietnamese former Party chief. Writing in the funeral guest book, the Lao leader expressed profound grief from the party, national assembly, government and front of the country over the passing of Do Muoi, and praised him for his great contributions to the national defence, construction and development of Vietnam, as well as the consolidation and nurture of the friendly and special ties and solidarity between the two nations.

The passing away of Do Muoi also means the loss of one of the closest friends of Laos, he stressed, describing the former Party chief as a staunch revolutionary and a talented and respectable leader of Vietnam.

A delegation of Cambodia led by Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An to the funeral expressed deep condolences to the Party, Government and people of Vietnam as well as the bereaved family over the passing of Do Muoi. In the funeral guest book, she described this as a loss of a top leader to the Vietnamese Party, Government and people.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the Cuban Communist Party led by Secretary of the party Central Committee Olga Lidia Tapia Iglesia and a delegation of the Japanese Communist Party also paid last respect to Do Muoi.

Many ambassadors, representatives of foreign countries and international organizations in Vietnam did the same and expressed their deep grief over the passing of the former Party General Secretary.

United States Ambassador Daniel J. Kritenbrink wrote in the funeral guest book that throughout Do Muoi’s tenure, Vietnam and his country solved many issues left by history in an open manner, accelerated the reconciliation between the two nations and established official bilateral relations in 1995. On the basis of the legacy of Do Muoi, the governments and peoples of have developed their partnership and friendship in an intensive and extensive way, the diplomat stressed.

UNICEF Vietnam Representative Youssouf Ould Abdel-Jelil highlighted that the imprints left by Do Muoi will be preserved in Vietnam’s human-centred and sustainable development, in which Vietnamese children enjoy good care and chances for their fullest development.

Chief Representative of the IMP in Vietnam Jonathan Dunn praised Do Muoi for his great contributions to the country’s economic reform efforts in the initial stage which, he said, helped created outstanding improvements in the life of the Vietnamese people.

Cuban General Consul in Ho Chi Minh City Indira Lopez Arguelles called Do Muoi one of the great friends of her country. He stands as an icon of the friendship and friendship between the two nations, his passing is not only a loss of the Party and people of Vietnam but also that of Cuba, the diplomat stressed.

For his part, Russian General Consul in Ho Chi Minh City Alexei V. Popov affirmed that Do Muoi will remain forever in the heart of each people as an outstanding leader who had made great contributions to the consolidation of the relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Malaysian General Consul in Ho Chi Minh City Sofian A. Karim stressed that Do Muoi will be remembered for his special services to the country and people. His devotion is of great significance to the consolidation of the relations between Malaysia and Vietnam, the diplomat affirmed.

On behalf of the Japanese community in Ho Chi Minh City, General Consul Junichi Kawaue said his country will always bear memorize Do Muoi’s contributions to the pushing up of the fine cooperation and friendly relations between Japan and Vietnam.

Foreign leaders send condolences over former Party chief’s passing

Leaders of countries and parties sent their letters of condolences over the passing away of former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Do Muoi to leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State and people, and the deceased’s family.

In his letter sent to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Secretary-General of the People's Action Party (PAP) of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong showed his profound sympathy over the death of Do Muoi, appreciating his important role in deepening bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Vietnam, and between relations between the PAP and the CPV.

The Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) conveyed its condolences to the Vietnamese Party, Government and people and the deceased’s family. In its message, the committee wrote that Do Muoi is a senior revolutionist and well-known politician of the Vietnamese Party and State.

Condolences also came from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko; Thongvin Phomvihane, wife of late Lao President Kaysone Phomvihane; the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Japan; the Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain; Patrik Köbele, leader of the Communist Party of Germany; and Park Robyug, Secretary General of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).

Party leader Do Muoi remembered with high praise

General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong writes in funeral book 

Mourners of former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Do Muoi at his State funeral in Hanoi were full of praise for the Party leader for his contributions to the Party and nation. 

General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong wrote in the funeral book that Do Muoi had made huge contributions to national liberation, reunification and national construction and defence. 

Acting President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh wrote that his passing has left a profound sorrow for Vietnamese Party, State and people and many friends and comrades worldwide. Later generations will always be grateful and remember his life, career and dedication for independence, freedom and well-being of Vietnamese people. 

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the leader’s role in developing heavy industry and national industrialization and modernization. The former Party General Secretary, with his view of “Vietnam ready to be a friend of all countries,” had opened up a new era of external relations, making breakthrough strides in Vietnam’s external relations and global integration. 

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan remembered Do Muoi as a righteous, exemplary, talented and steadfast leader of the CPV, adding that his entire life was dedicated to national liberation and reunification, and for peace, prosperity and well-being of the people. 

President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Tran Thanh Man said over 80 years of his revolutionary career, the leader left deep impression on comrades and people in any position. 

Secretary of the Hanoi municipal Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai lauded the leader for his leadership of the country’s reform, taking the national economy out of a difficult period, driving back inflation, shifting from a State-subsidised economy to a socialist-oriented market economy and normalising ties with countries worldwide. 

In Ho Chi Minh City, delegations from ministries, agencies, mass organisations, localities and people from walks of life in the south came to Thong Nhat Hall since early in the morning to pay tribute to the former CPV General Secretary.

Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan said the municipal Party Committee and administration forever remember the former Party chief’s support of the city since the early days of Doi Moi to present.

86-year-old Nguyen Thi Kim Hong shared that Do Muoi is known as an honest and firm leader who always works for the country and the people. 

Many religious representatives and youth union officials also expressed deep grief over his passing in the funeral book.

Vietnamese embassies open funeral books for former Party chief

LPRP General Secretary and President of Laos Bounnhang Volachith writes in the condolence book for former Party General Secretary Do Muoi. 

Vietnamese embassies across the world held ceremonies to pay tribute to and open condolences books for former Party General Secretary Do Muoi, who passed away in Hanoi on October 1 at the age of 101. 

A delegation of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and the State of Laos led by LPRP General Secretary and President of Laos Bounnhang Volachith paid last respects to Do Muoi at the Vietnamese Embassy in Vientiane on October 6 morning. 

The Lao party leader and President wrote in the condolence book that with the passing of Do Muoi, not only the Party, State and people of Vietnam lose an exemplary revolutionary and a beloved leader, but the Lao Party, State and people also lose a close friend. 

“Comrade Do Muoi has made great contributions to Vietnam’s cause of national defence, construction and development over the past more than 80 years. He also contributed greatly to strengthening and fostering the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam,” Bounnhang Volachith wrote. 

The day before, Chairwoman of the Lao National Assembly Pany Yathotou also led a delegation to pay homage to Do Muoi at the Vietnamese Embassy. 

Representatives from Lao ministries, agencies, and foreign embassies in Vientiane came to the Vietnamese Embassy to pay tribute to the former Party chief of Vietnam and offer condolences. 

In Singapore, the Vietnamese Embassy is opening the condolence book from October 5 to 7. 

On behalf of the Singaporean Government, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan paid last respects to Do Muoi at the Vietnamese Embassy.

Writing in the condolence book, the minister hailed the role of former Party General Secretary Do Muoi in Vietnam’s process of integration into the world economy, noting that under his leadership, Vietnam joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1995.

At the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba, on behalf of the Communist Party and State of Cuba, Secretary of the Party Central Committee José Ramón Balaguer wrote in the funeral book that during the most difficult time of Cuba, Do Muoi as Party General Secretary had demonstrated permanent friendship and love for Cuba, provided the biggest possible help to Cuba and warmly welcomed Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz when he visited Vietnam in 1995. 

Vietnamese Embassies in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, France and Canada have also held tribute ceremonies and opened funeral books for former Party General Secretary Do Muoi.

Do Muoi, who passed away in Hanoi on October 1 at the age of 101, served as General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee from June 1991 to December 1997.
