VietNamNet Bridge - At the invitation of the Director of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), Professor Furuta Motoo, former Managing Director of the University of Tokyo, Japan has become the Rector of the Vietnam-Japan University - one of the seven member universities of VNU.

On April 13, authorized by the VNU Director, Deputy Director Le Quan met with the Rector of the Vietnam-Japan University, Professor Furuta Motoo.

Prof. Furuta Motoo held many important positions at the University of Tokyo and the Chair of the Japanese Association of Southeast Asia Studies.

Prof. Furuta Motoo has over 30 years of study on Vietnam, and is currently the Chairman of the Japanese-Vietnamese Friendship Association and Chairman of the Japanese Association of Vietnam Studies.

He is also an expert on the history and politics of modern Vietnam, who has greatly contributed to promoting the establishment of the Vietnam-Japan University. He was recently granted the Honorary Doctorate of the VNU.

Dr. Le Quan, VNU Deputy Director, said the VNU is implementing a program to attract international scholars, including overseas Vietnamese to work for VNU and its affiliates.

Quan said the VNU is interested in employing reputable scientists who can make connection between the VNU and other scholars.

In addition, VNU’s more than 500 employees who are Ph.Ds trained abroad play the role of VNU ambassadors to attract foreign colleagues and professors to be engaged in the activities of  VNU.

Quan said the VNU had invited Prof. Nguyen Duc Khuong, who is ranked 7th in the Top 200 leading economists by the Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) project to participate in the program. Prof. Khuong has invited tens of international scholars to join the program and over ten of them have agreed.

Through this program, the VNU is expected to have more overseas Vietnamese scientists to be guest lecturers at the university. The VNU has also attracted many international students.
