Foreigners' fake credit cards confiscated by police recently

On the evening of June 18, Lu Lei and Shang Ai Yu came to Mai Nguyen Shop on Vo Thi Sau Street in District 3 to buy two iPhones and some related accessories worth total VND47 million (USD2,130) using an HSBC credit card.

The credit card used for the purchase failed four times. However, when Lu Lei instructed them to swipe the cards, the system said the payment had been successful.

The staff suspected the card was fake and asked Lu Lei to show his passport, but unsurprisingly he said that he had left it at the hotel.

The staff refused to hand over the mobile phones and said they would be delivered to him the next morning.

Meanwhile, they called the police and HSBC.

On the morning of June 19, Lu Lei went back to the shop with Yao Wen Lin. Lu showed his passport to the staff to compare the information of his credit card used for the payment.

Then an HSBC representative and police came to the shop and detained the two men.

Following the inspection, the police also detained Shang Ai Yu and Wang Lin Nin.

The police then found several credit cards which were suspected to be fake.

The men entered Vietnam early May this year are suspected to be related to a group that had committed other crimes abroad.

The investigation continues.
