The list of nominees features two Vietnamese players -- midfielder Dinh Thanh Trung of Quang Nam FC, the current V.League champions, and midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet of Hanoi FC, a former V.League winner.
Both of them play for the national team and are captains of their club.
FourFourTwo’s website says Trung is a creative force in Vietnamese football, having led a less popular Quang Nam to their first ever V.League victory to earn himself the “Player of the Year” honour.
Trung is also one of the nominees in the Best ASEAN Player of the Year category.
Quyet has been described by FourFourTwo as a key player of Hanoi FC, helping the team win two premier league trophies in 2013 and 2016. He represented his country at the 2014 and 2016 Suzuki Cups.
He is the captain of the national football team and has recently denied an offer from a club in Malaysia Super League for the coming season.
The Vietnamese duo will be against Thai quartet Teerasil Dangda, Chanathip Songkrasin, Jakkaphan Kaewprom and Theerathon Bunmathan, Aung Thu of Myanmar, Andritany Ardhiyasa from Indonesia, Malaysian Safiq Rahim and Hassan Sunny of Singapore to claim the award.
