Fox Sports Asia has named Cong Phuong as the “Player of the Day” thanks to his outstanding performance in the Group D match between Vietnam and Iraq in the AFC Asian Cup 2019 on January 8.

According to the website, although Vietnam did not win, Cong Phuong held up the ball and passed it well in the final third of the pitch.

“His link-up play eventually led to Vietnam’s second goal”, according to FOX Sports Asia.

The website noted that the Vietnamese maestro was also willing to get into physical duels against the much bigger Iraqi players and his physicality troubled the Iraqi defence throughout the game. 

After the match, the Vietnamese player said he felt sorry for the Vietnamese team, adding that the team will try their best in the next two games.
