Nguyen Vinh Quang, director of FPT Semiconductor.

During a recent visit by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to FPT University and FPT Software at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park in Hanoi, a representative of FPT Corporation reported the results of the establishment of the FPT Semiconductor Joint Stock Company (FPT Semiconductor) in March 2022.

The company will contribute to realizing the semiconductor manufacturing dream of many generations of Vietnamese since 1979.

Nguyen Vinh Quang, director of FPT Semiconductor, said in 2022 FPT Semiconductor designed and manufactured three lines of source chips and inked the first contract for 25 million chips in 2024 and 2025 with its partners.

“FPT is working on an order of 2 million chips for a Japanese client. It is expected that in 2023 FPT will have seven new chip lines. In early 2024, FPT Semiconductor will continue to design and manufacture IoT platform chips for smart device applications for the agriculture, forestry, and seafood processing industries," said Nguyen Vinh Quang.

In Vietnam, the research, design and production of ICs and semiconductors have enjoyed the highest incentives offered by preferential policies for investment.

However, Vietnam has no special solutions to develop the semiconductor chip industry.

Facing the strong development of the semiconductor chip field, FPT has asked the Government to create favorable conditions to develop human resources for this industry, especially in semiconductor chip design.

“Vietnam needs to set up a national center to support the semiconductor industry to develop resources in the long run like Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea did. Vietnam also needs to attract and call on large corporations around the world to invest in building factories and in training personnel for this industry,” said Quang.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that FPT's choice to develop IT, digital technology, software design and production, and chip production is the right path, suitable for the trends of the times.

"This approach is also suited to our country's circumstances, contributing to building an independent and self-reliant economy, associated with proactive and extensive international integration in a substantive and effective manner," the Prime Minister said.

Regarding the proposal for a center to connect resources to support the semiconductor industry, the Prime Minister said that the Government would definitely do this.
