Two French tourists have complained about being given votive money as change by a cyclo driver in Hanoi.

The Hanoi Department of Tourism said they are co-operating with the police to investigate a complaint by the French tourists about being given votive money as change of VND900,000 (USD40) by a local cyclo driver.

A video clip about the tourists talking about the case went viral on July 17.

According to the tourists, they called a cyclo for an hour tour around the Old Quarter in Hoan Kiem District for an agreed price of VND 600,000 (USD26).

After the tour, they gave the cyclo driver VND1.5m and the driver gave them the change with one VND500,000 and two-VND200,000 notes.

On the morning of July 17, the two men used the notes to pay for a taxi ride and were told that they were votive money.

After the clip was posted on the internet, many people criticised the cyclo driver and urged local authorities to investigate the case.
