Living with worms and eating among the garbage. That's how one resident in Chuong My District describes his life since a flood virtually submerged an entire region 30km away from Hanoi.

But for those that live in the district, it's nothing new. The area is specifically designed as a floodplain to prevent the waters ever reaching the capital city.

People who live there now have found themselves homeless waiting for the water to subside.

And they are also living among garbage, sewage and the bodies of dead animals.

Officials say they have set up a medical centre to offer treatment for anyone who gets sick because of the current living conditions.  — VNS
