VietNamNet Bridge – Local media have reported that a species of giant mushroom has appeared in the gardens of several households in Luong Quan of Thuy Bieu Ward, Hue City in Thua Thien Hue Province.

The strange mushroom species has a big body in light yellow color outside and dark red inside, about 20-25cm tall, and the ear is about 20-30cm in diameter. When the mushrooms die, they spread an unpleasant odor.

Local residents said that they had never seen this species of mushroom before.

They said the mushrooms grow very quickly. They usually appear from the roots of thanh tra (Bouea gandaria Blume) trees. Notably, when the mushrooms die, the roots of thanh tra trees have tumors. If the tumors are not cut off, the thanh tra trees will die.

To limit the growth of mushrooms, people spray powdered lime on the mushrooms.

Dr. Ngo Anh, a mushroom expert of the Biology Faculty of the Hue University of Sciences, said these were Boletus mushrooms, which usually grow in warm areas in winter, mainly in the pine forest or warm lands. The mushrooms usually die after two to three days.

Local authorities have told people to not eat the mushrooms.

Many people have flocked to the region to see the strange, giant mushrooms.
