PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue and leaders of several ministries, agencies and localities on October 15 attended the national teleconference on the implementation of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction.

The teleconference was organized by the Central Steering Committee for 2016-2020 National Target Programs.

Speaking at the event, the PM affirmed that the Party and State pay special attention to poverty reduction, thus the country’s poverty rate fell down to 4.25% in 2015 from 14.2% in 2010.

The country sets the target of reducing the proportion of poor households by 1-1.5% annually between 2016 and 2020 in a sustainable way, especially among ethnic minorities.

PM Phuc highlighted the importance of designing solutions to encourage poor people to overcome their hard conditions to get rid of poverty sustainably as the State can not fund them all the time.

United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Country Director Louise Chamberlain highly appraised the program in which the Government will further strengthen decentralization and create favorable conditions for people’s involvement in the process of implementing this program.

The program was also designed to encourage self-reliance of the poor, she added.

The UNDP commits to assisting Viet Nam in realizing the developments goals of the UN-led 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, she affirmed.

The Government chief also took the occasion to officially launch an emulation movement for the period 2016-2020 to make sure that no one left behind in the fight against poverty.

He tasked inferior levels to mobilize all resources from businesses to official development assistance to raise funds for the poor.
