Grab says not responsible for Uber’s USD2.33 million tax arrears

According to a representative from Grab, Grab did not buy Uber’s liabilities in Vietnam, so it will not be responsible for the tax arrears. Uber still has to be responsible for the payment.

However, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Finance, Vu Thi Mai stressed at a recent Government regular press conference that after the merger, the new enterprise would take on all the tax responsibilities.

Nguyen Nam Binh, deputy head of the HCM City General Department of Taxation, said that the department will review the terms of the purchase contract between Uber and Grab. If the two parties agreed that Grab will shoulder Uber’s tax obligations, Grab will have to pay the VND53.3 billion to the tax department. In case the tax obligation was not mentioned in the contract, the department will have to find a solution to collect the tax arrears.

Binh added that the department had not received any report about the merger with Uber from Grab.

Uber had only paid VND13.3 billion (USD585,665) of the VND66.68 billion (USD2.94 million) in tax arrears by the December 2017 deadline. The department decided to take enforcement measures to collect the missing sum but failed.
