Many households who earn a living from peach and kumquat trees are losing sleep as they stay up all night tending to their ornamental trees in preparation for the traditional Lunar New Year festival (Tet).
Night time temperatures in Hanoi drop below 10 degrees C as many households stay awake in the chilly weather caring for their expensive ornamental trees. Even during daytime, these men burn dry sticks to warm their peach trees. Orchard owners instruct their staff to take round-the-clock care of the ornamental trees along the streets of Vo Chi Cong and Lac Long Quan. A man tries to warm up by smoking cigarettes and drinking hot tea amid chilly weather. Some people wear hats and scarves to insulate themselves from the cold spell gripping Hanoi. These expensive peach trees are lit with heat lamps to prevent any damage from the cold. To cope with the low temperatures, many orchard owners use special techniques to ensure peach trees bloom exactly on time for the Tet holiday. According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecast, another blast of cold air is set to arrive in Hanoi on February 2 and will last until February 5. Ice and frost will be widespread in the northern mountains. |
