HackerRank ran the coding challenges and assigned scores based on a combination of accuracy and speed. Its University Rankings Competition was intended to find out where the best coders go to school.

The headline result is – Russian Federation College | Russia (No. 1); Sun Yat-sen Memorial Middle School | China (No. 2); Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (HCMUS) | Vietnam (No. 3); University of California, Berkeley | United States (No. 4); and University of Waterloo | Canada (No. 5)

Ritika Trikha explains on the HackerRank blog, why the study was needed: While there are academic rankings, like the Top Computer Science Programs by US News & World report, there is no list that ranks colleges purely by their students’ ability to code.

The criteria for the US News & World Report, for instance, includes number of research papers produced, global research reputation and number of conferences. In fact, practical coding skills aren’t even part of their methodology at all.

In its study, HackerRank rated more than 5,500 students from 126 schools around the globe.
