The new urban area model

The Government Inspectorate was asked to inspect the project after Nguyen Thi Thom and other local people filed complaints about the land reclamation for the Cam River urban area. They must report the results to the prime minister in May.

According to Thom, her family had lived there for a long time. There are also many state buildings nearby. However, they were suddenly told that their house was located in a flood drainage corridor. Thom and other locals demanded to see the evidence but the district authorities refused to show the original documents relating to the land.

Thom went on to say that there were many problems with this project, saying that many people didn't like haggling compensation prices with the investors. "We support the project but we also want everything to be transparent so that our rights will be protected," she said.

The urban area project in the north of Cam River was started on August 17, 2017, by Hai Phong Urban Development and Construction Management Board. The total investment for the project reached VND10,000 which will come from the city's budget and other sources.

The project includes 1,138-metre Hoang Van Thu bridge construction, a 2,016-metre embankment, and new roads for the area. The 324-hectare urban area was supposed to be completed in two years but has lagged behind schedule because of ground clearance problems.

There will be an administrative centre, shopping centre, residential blocks and areas for cultural activities.
