Hai Phong City still wants to continue holding Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival which was temporarily halted after a local man was gored to death by his fighting buffalo.

The city authorities have sent a document to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to report on the accident in the Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival 2017, in which, a buffalo attacked and killed its owner.    

A man is gored to death by his fighting buffalo at the Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival 2017 in Hai Phong Province on July 1.

During the qualifying round on July 1, Buffalo 18 suddenly ran away. It at first chased the owner of the other animal but failed to catch him and then turned on its owner Dinh Xuan Huong, who died several hours later from multiple wounds after being gored.

Right after that Do Son District was requested to suspend this year’s festival and consider how to organise it more carefully in the future.

In the document sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Haiphong authorities said that they will instruct Do Son District to revise regulations on the buffalo fighting festival. Specifically, the qualifying round will be removed, so only the final round will be organised on the 9th of the lunar month of August. Safety will be the first priority of the festival.

Hoang Trung Hieu, vice chairman of Do Son District People’s Committee and head of the buffalo fighting festival, said that the Haiphong still wants to continue organising the festival. He added that the activity was a traditional and spiritual event without any commercial purpose.

Following the fatal accident, police took blood samples from Buffalo 18, however, no stimulants were found.
