The life sentence was given to Nguyen Thi An, 30, and the 20-year to Nguyen Thi Lanh, 31, at a trial held on Friday morning by the Hanoi People's Court.
According to the indictment, An and Lanh, who have permanent residence in Phu Xuyen District, Hanoi, rented a house in Van Diem Commune, Thuong Tin District to provide daycare service in late 2022. They had no qualifications in the field and had yet to make business registration by the time the deadly incident occurred to the boy who just boarded their facility for more than one week.
On February 23, 2023, Lanh was angry at the boy for crying and running outdoors when it was nap time at the daycare facility and used her two hands to pick him up and threw him down, causing his head to hit the floor. Then, Lanh slapped the victim and An kicked the baby’s stomach, chest, as well as booted and stepped on his head. When the child’s parents came to pick him up later that day, the two babysitters said that he fell by himself.
Then the boy's family kept sending him to the daycare service on February 24, 25, and 26.
On the morning of February 26, An kicked the boy's abdomen again for crying. The kick left the victim unconscious. Anh called Lanh who was out at that time and the two tried to give first aid to the boy but failed.
They then called the baby’s family and then took the victim to a local medical facility for emergency treatment. The boy was then transferred to the National Children's Hospital, which gave him a death prognosis the same afternoon. His family took him home and he passed away that day.
Autopsy results showed that the boy died from traumatic brain injury, bleeding, and cerebral edema.
At the Friday trial, An and Lanh admitted to assaulting, beating and abusing the boy and apologised to his family. They also expressed hope to have their sentences reduced.
