Hanoi authorities have announced plans to relocate the “Determined to Die for the Fatherland to Live” monument to the Hanoi Capital Command, where its historical and revolutionary significance will continue to be preserved and promoted.

The Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the city People’s Committee has instructed the department, the Hanoi Capital Command and the Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee to coordinate the relocation of the “Determined to Die for the Fatherland to Live” monument from the grounds of the nationally recognized Ba Kieu Temple historical site to Regiment 692 of Infantry Division 301 under the Hanoi Capital Command.
The move is intended to ensure that the monument’s historical and revolutionary significance continues to be preserved and promoted.
“Determined to Die for the Fatherland to Live” is a phrase taken from a letter President Ho Chi Minh sent to soldiers of the Capital Regiment. The depiction of soldiers alongside those enduring words honors the courage and heroism of Hanoi’s troops and residents during 60 days and nights of fierce fighting that marked the beginning of the nationwide resistance war.
At present, other works commemorating the same historical period can be found nearby, including the “Hanoi in Winter 1946” relief at Dong Xuan Market and another “Determined to Die for the Fatherland to Live” monument at Van Xuan Garden.
According to the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, experts, scientists and relevant agencies consulted during the research process agreed that relocating the monument to the Hanoi Capital Command was appropriate to its historical significance, given its connection with the formation, combat history and development of the capital’s armed forces.
For the Hanoi Capital Command, receiving the monument represents both an honor and a source of pride, as well as a profound responsibility to history, generations of officers and soldiers of the capital’s armed forces, and the people of Hanoi.
Placing the “Determined to Die for the Fatherland to Live” monument in a solemn setting within the Hanoi Capital Command compound will not only preserve the work’s historical and cultural value in its entirety, but also strengthen its role in educating future generations about Vietnam’s revolutionary traditions and inspiring pride and the spirit embodied by the phrase among today’s officers, soldiers and young people.
Under the plan, the monument will be relocated and reinstalled before September 30.
