As usual, Hanoi’s streets at the end of the year are transformed into a brilliant space along with shimmering lights and decorations for the Christmas holidays. A happy Christmas atmosphere prevailed over the capital with a range of bustling activities on Christmas Eve made it a sleepless night for thousands of people to celebrate the last days of 2016.

Thousands of Hanoians flocked to the streets and churches to join Christmas Eve celebrations.

The walking streets in addition to churches, business centres, shops, hotels and cafes sparkle with colourful Christmas decorations, such as Jesus' crib, a Christmas tree, Santa Claus and gifts.

Right from the early evening on Christmas Eve, pedestrian streets around Hoan Kiem Lake and those leading to the Saint Joseph Cathedral of Hanoi were crowded.

As a centre of Catholic activities in Hanoi and surrounding areas, the Hanoi Cathedral remains a highlight of the Christmas holidays. Both its inside and outside were decorated earlier this month to bring in a colourful and happy Christmas atmosphere. This year, a giant Christmas tree was erected on the right side of the church.

Trang Tien Plaza was beautifully decorated. The commercial centre’s front was lit up by thousands of lights, attracting thousands of people to take pictures.

Stores also sought to stimulate demand with their major price cuts during the Christmas holiday.

Apart from bustling streets, brightly decorated cafés were also popular choices to enjoy a warm and quiet Christmas Eve.

Hanoi pedestrian streets were also transformed into exciting spaces along with many attractive activities held on Christmas Eve. In this picture, young people participate in a traditional dance named nhay sap (bamboo dance).
