VietNamNet Bridge – More than 1,000 old trees on Pham Van Dong Street will be chopped down by the end of this year to broaden the street and build a bridge on Belt Road No. 3.

This was confirmed by the Ha Noi Transport Construction Project Management Board, Dan Tri online newspaper reported on Tuesday.

At least 14 trees will be cut down on Wednesday and moved to another road where they will be planted and nurtured under the first phase of the project.

Responding to residents’ concerns about the controversial decision to chop down old trees, Ha Noi Mayor Nguyen Duc Chung has pledged that his administration will provide clear information on its plans to replace, cut and remove trees along local streets.

Old trees would be removed if they are located in areas where the city plans to upgrade transport infrastructure, including broadening roads and building bridges, he said.

Chung said his administration and relevant agencies had carefully considered the proposal and only permitted the chopping down of trees in case it was unavoidable.
