A worker at West Lake Environment Company said the company had appointed more than 20 people to collect waste from the lake, especially from December 23 to January 4 of the lunar calendar (from February 1 to 11).

Several tonnes of waste were collected from the banks of the lake each day, he said.

"The foul smell of dead fish is making passersby feel breathless. I often do morning exercises on the road along the lake, but I have stopped doing so for several days now because I cannot stand the smell coming from the lake," a local resident said.

He said harsh weather probably killed the fish, but some people said polluted water had caused the problem.

One of the reasons for the pollution is that people discharge their wastes into the lake.

Although environment workers have worked continuously, they have not collected all the waste from the lake so far.
