Hanoi parents face 41.9% tuition fee rise

The tuition fees for nursery and high schools will all be raised in urban, rural and mountainous areas.

The monthly tuition fee per pupil in urban areas will rise by 40 per cent from VND155,000 (US$6.40) to VND217,000 ($9.04).

Monthly tuition fees for pupils in rural areas will be raised by 26.7 per cent from VND75,000 ($3.10) to VND95,000 ($3.90), and those in mountainous areas will be raised by 26.3 per cent from VND19,000 ($0.79) to VND24,000 ($1).

Tuition fees for five-year-old children and pupils at secondary schools will be kept unchanged this academic year.

Monthly tuition fees for these students will be VND155,000 ($6.4) in urban areas, VND75,000 ($3.1) in rural areas and VND19,000 ($0.79) in mountainous areas.

The Ha Noi’s People’s Council said the rise in tuition fees would be used to improve teachers’ salaries and improve teaching equipment and facilities.

It claimed that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds will not be affected as they will have tuition fee exemptions or reductions according to Government decree 86/2015/NĐ-CP.

The new tuition fees will apply from this academic year.

In 2017, the city’s People's Council approved a resolution to raise tuition fees every year until the 2020-21 academic year.
