Congestion on Nguyen Trai Street

On March 11, Director of Hanoi Department of Transport Vu Van Vien confirmed that motorbikes will be banned on Nguyen Trai or Le Van Luong Street. This is the pilot programme for the motorbike ban in the city centre in 2030.

The department is working with the Ministry of Transport to build a detailed plan for the 2030 ban. Before banning motorbikes in the inner districts, they will apply the ban on different streets and residential areas depending on the infrastructure, public transport system traffic flow and density.

Since both Nguyen Trai and Le Van Luong streets have developed infrastructure and on-going Cat Linh-Ha Dong urban railway project, one of them will be chosen for the pilot.

"With public buses, rapid bus transit and the metro line which will be put into operation this second quarter, they are the most suitable locations for the pilot," Vien said.

They will apply the motorbike ban on one of those streets two to three years earlier than the 2030 ban. Vien claimed that the city's public transportation can replace personal vehicles by then.

According to the project, 80% of the citizens in the city centre must have easy access to public transportation and they will not have to walk more than 500m. 20% of the people that live in alleyways can use bicycles, taxi or walk.
