Streets in 12 inner-city districts of Hanoi will be paved with flagstones which have a lifespan of up to 50 to 70 years, instead of current cement bricks.

On September 7, the municipal Department of Construction held a meeting on the work. Companies which specialise in material supplies for city’s pavements are being asked to turn to using natural stones.

According to Le Van Duc, the department director, pavements of many streets in Hanoi have seriously deteriorated, affecting the appearance of the city and safety of pedestrians.

Many pavements currently use cement bricks which are often easy to become moss-grown and mouldy, particularly after rains. The bricks are easily broken by one-tonne trucks.

Due to their short lifespan, pavements in Hanoi often are repaired and upgraded every 3 to 4 years, upsetting local households.

To deal with the problem, the Hanoi Department of Construction has instructed all infrastructure projects in the city to ensure water supply and electric cables are buried.

The Hanoi Department of Construction said flagstones will be first used in 12 inner-city districts.
