Hanoi City has sent an official dispatch to the prime minister and the Ministry of Transport proposing to have one more international airport, instead of a domestic one, and include it in the national airport system development master plan for 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050.

The plan to have two international airports is meant for the Hanoi City area that also encompasses neighboring provinces.

According to the Hanoi City government, the capital city area is expected to have around 21-23 million people by 2050 and a total land area of 24,314 square kilometers, similar to the HCMC area.

The national airport system development master plan submitted by the Ministry of Transport to the prime minister for consideration also plans to include two international airports for the HCMC area, namely Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh International Airport.

Earlier, while giving feedback on the national airport system development master plan for 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050, the Hanoi City People’s Committee proposed the Ministry of Transport study the size of its second airport and include it in the master plan, raising the two airports’ capacity to handle 130 to 150 million passengers per year by 2050 to meet the projected demand and aviation development orientation of the capital city.

However, Hanoi’s second airport mentioned in the project submitted by the ministry to the prime minister refers to the capital city’s second airport as a domestic one.
