A series of videos capturing the everyday life of a height-mismatched couple in Hanoi has attracted millions of views on TikTok. Whether traveling, dining out or taking commemorative photos, the couple often encounters amusing situations because of their striking height difference.

The couple are Nguyen Van Hoa (born in 1996) and Doan Thao My (born in 1998), who live and work in Hanoi.

Standing at an impressive 1.91m, Hoa always stands out in a crowd. My is only 1.53m tall with a petite frame. Over the past eight years since they first met, their height difference has become a unique ingredient in their relationship.

Hoa previously worked as a male model, while My spent some time as a child model at fashion events. They met in 2018 at a fashion show in HCMC. From their very first encounter, each was struck by the other's distinctive height.

"That year, I was already 20 years old but was still invited to work as a child model because of my petite build and youthful appearance. When he first met me, he thought I was only 12 or 13 years old.

"When we met again at a gathering in Hanoi, we still remembered each other, so we exchanged contact information and started talking more often," My recalled.

My had always been attracted to tall men. One of her criteria for a future husband was a height of at least 1.80m. When she met Hoa, a 1.91m-tall man with a cheerful and humorous personality, she felt he was exactly the person she had been looking for.

Their mutual attraction helped the relationship progress quickly and naturally. There was no dramatic pursuit; as they put it, "we liked each other, so we got together." After four months of getting to know one another, they officially began dating.

During their five years of courtship, the couple experienced countless humorous situations. Whenever they went out together, people often noticed the contrast between one being exceptionally tall and the other remarkably petite.

Whenever Hoa wanted to show affection, he had to bend down significantly.

Even standing on tiptoe, My could barely reach her boyfriend's face. In contrast, Hoa could easily lift her into the air, even carrying her on one shoulder with a single arm. When taking photos, they often struggled to find suitable poses and camera angles to create the perfect shot.

One of My's most memorable moments while dating was the day she visited Hoa's family for the first time.

She was surprised to discover that everyone in his family was tall. His parents and siblings all stood at least 1.70m tall.

"That day, his family was quite surprised by how small I was. Someone secretly asked him, 'What grade is this girl in?' He jokingly replied, 'She's in ninth grade and only 15 years old this year.' Everyone believed him.

"His parents were so concerned that they asked me a question that caught me off guard: 'Are you old enough to get married yet?' It was definitely a memorable experience," My said.

A happy marriage

The couple tied the knot in 2023 after five years together. Even their wedding photo shoot came with its own challenges.

Although My wore 15cm heels, she still appeared much shorter than Hoa. The photography team eventually brought in an additional 15cm platform for her to stand on so they could pose more comfortably.

On their wedding day, My wore only high heels without the platform, making the height difference even more noticeable. Guests jokingly referred to them as the "lamp post and water dispenser" couple. For My, those lighthearted comments became cherished memories of her special day.

Being married to such a tall husband always gives My a sense of protection and security. During both of her pregnancies and deliveries, Hoa took care of her attentively. Aside from pumping milk for their children, she rarely had to do any household tasks.

In My's eyes, Hoa is a responsible husband and father who always puts the family's well-being first. As they both run businesses, they find it easy to understand and support one another. Although disagreements occasionally arise, mutual respect and understanding help them quickly reconcile.

"After five years of dating and three years of marriage, I truly believe I chose the right person," My said.
