Over 10,000 local people from Hanoi gathered together to participate in a ceremony held in Bat Trang commune of Gia Lam district which sees fish released into a river to mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year on February 12.

The event is held annually on the eighth day of the first month of the Lunar New Year.

Early in the morning, trucks carrying approximately 10 tonnes of fish gather around Bat Trang commune in order to provide the fish for the ceremony.

Monks read aloud at the ceremony, they have been invited by the organisers to host the event.

Local people help to transfer the baskets of fish from the trucks to the riverside before releasing the fish.

The ceremony usually lasts for 2 hours.
