Traffic police ( in yellow) adjust traffic situation at the flooded Ly Thuong Kiet - Phan Boi Chau intersection after a torrential rain in Hanoi.

The warning was issued after the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting predicted that torrential rains and thunderstorms starting Tuesday morning would continue to hit Hanoi and northern localities until June 20.

Residents were told not to use the bridges of Thang Long, Nhat Tan, Vinh Tuy and other flyovers in the city when thunderstorms occurred to avoid unexpected incidents that could threaten their safety, the committee said.

Additionally, residents were advised to not use the streets of Nguyen Chi Thanh, Tran Duy Hung and Duong Dinh Nghe. These streets having several high-rise buildings often experience strong winds during thunderstorms.

The city’s Agriculture and Rural Development Department was tasked to co-operate with the forecasting centre to give residents the latest weather updates, so that they could actively prepare, the committee said.

In another movement, the national forecasting centre also predicted that floods could appear in the rivers of Thao and Lo between Thursday and Saturday, the flood amplitude being about 3m to 5m.

The northern mountainous province of Lai Chau, Son La, Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Ha Giang have been put on high alert for flash floods and landslides.
