The first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route in Hanoi started operating on Thursday morning, facing challenges in huge congestion on many streets during the morning rush hours.

More than 20 buses began using a separate bus lane with 21 stops located on the median strips of the streets within the route.

The 14.7 kilometre route runs from Kim Ma Bus Station in Ba Dinh District to Yen Nghia Station in Ha Dong District through some busy streets including Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, Le Trong Tan, Tran Phu and Ba La.

First passengers are offered free bus service during BRT test run.

Each bus has a capacity of 90 passengers.

Many cars were seen running in the bus lane without being stopped despite a fine has been announced.

Sometimes the BRT buses also left their lane

There are doubts that BRT buses can be faster than normal buses due to the city’s narrow roads.
