Dr. Nguyen Viet Thanh performed surgery on Edward Hartley, 53, who died during the operation in July last year to remove loose skin around his hip.

Hartley had lost 18 kilos, so he came to Viet Thanh cosmetic surgery clinic in District 10 for excess skin removal.

After checking in at 4 pm on July 19, the patient was made to lie on the operating table for surgery to be conducted by Dr Nguyen Viet Thanh. However, after receiving anaesthesia for 10-15 minutes, Thanh found that the man showed signs of circuit obstruction via the monitor screen.

The doctor then implemented emergency procedures and also sought help from the nearby Trung Vuong Hospital, but all efforts failed finally.

Right after that Thanh informed local authorities of the death of the man at his clinic.

Following the incident, the municipal Health Department’s inspectors examined the clinic and found that it was not licensed to perform this type of surgery.

Viet Thanh Beauty Salon, which was licensed in May 2016, has been shut since the incident.

Dr Thanh has been fined VND64 million for carrying out the unlicensed surgery and for violating human resource and hygiene regulations during the operation.
