Doctors at Binh Dan Hospital in HCM City’s District 3 have successfully performed an endovascular intervention on a 57-year-old man with a hepatic artery aneurysm, a rare condition.
A doctor at HCM City’s Binh Dan Hospital with a patient following medical intervention.
The patient, who lives in District 7, was brought to the hospital in an emergency situation with pain in the upper abdomen, back and right shoulder for over a month.
He was diagnosed with an aneurysm of an artery in the liver, and a rupture would have been life threatening.
Dr Nguyen Chi Phong, deputy head of the hospital’s diagnostic image ward, said the aneurysm was in a location difficult to access.
Endovascular intervention was the best choice and the safest for the patient, he said.
The patient is recovering and would be discharged in five days, he said.
Hepatic artery aneurysm only occurs at a rate of 0.002-0.4 per cent of the population.
Its symptoms include pain in the upper abdomen similar to the one caused by colitis, digestive disorder and hepatitis, and the condition is easily misdiagnosed, Phong said.
In the case of late diagnosis, the aneurysm could rupture and cause death, he added.
