The program will be expanded to all 24 districts across the city to facilitate garbage recycling, energy recovery, and reduction of solid waste burial in the city.

In 2017, administrative agencies, schools, Saigon Zoo, Dam Sen Park, Suoi Tien Park, coach stations, shopping centers and supermarkets will pioneer to implement the program.

The municipal government has plans to provide dustbins, dustcarts and collection facilities in each area to deal with about 7,500 tons of waste discharged a day citywide.

Solid waste will be classified into three categories of biodegradable organic, reusable and recyclable, and other waste.

Then, they will be processed at two treatment complexes – Phuoc Hiep in Cu Chi District and Da Phuoc in Binh Chanh District.

The pilot program of waste classification at source in recent years has not been as effective as expected due to the asynchronous implementation, poor awareness of local people and poor waste collection systems.
