During the 2007-2017 period, HCM City could only dismantle 32 old apartment buildings which have seen the quite slow pace of being upgraded.
In 2017, the city dismantled just three of the planned 10.
HCM City Department of Construction said that at present around 15 old apartments in the city face serious deterioration. Many of them can collapse at any time, affecting 861 households.
Truc Giang, Vinh Hoi, 6 Bis Nguyen Tat Thanh, 440 Tran Hung Dao and 43 Binh Tay are among in the list which need to be upgraded as soon as possible.
Districts 5 and 10 account for the highest number of old apartment buildings, most of them located in populous areas.
In District 5, 206 buildings built before 1975 remain in use, some of them as old as 60 years; while District 10 has 40 apartments in serious disrepair, including ones built in the early 1970s like Ngo Gia Tu, An Quang and Nguyen Kim.
Experts said that the city must show how investors – who rebuild apartment buildings -can benefit by offering them incentives to attract them.
