According to the Xuyen Tam Canal upgrade plan, 54 hectares of land from over 1,900 households in Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts will be reclaimed.

The upgrade of the nine-kilometre canal will begin in August 2024 and is scheduled to be completed in 2028 with an investment of VND9.60 trillion (USD389 million).

After prolonged delays, the project includes dredging and cleaning up the polluted canal in the city’s Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts and building a wastewater collection and drainage system, a new road on each side with green areas and parks, and technical infrastructure.

Xuyen Tam Canal has been polluted by the illegal discharge of untreated domestic waste and wastewater from households for many years. That has caused blockages of water flow that pollute the environment and cause flooding.

Meanwhile, the upgrade of Doi Canal in District 8 will affect over 1,000 households with 5.50 hectares of land reclaimed.

The VND5 trillion project will start in 2025 and be completed in 2028.

The project, including dredging mud, installing wastewater and rainwater drainage systems, building two-lane roads and planting trees along two sides, is expected to help curb environmental pollution, prevent flooding, facilitate better travelling, and improve the area along the canal.
