Cat Lai struggles to deal with 2,000 abandoned containers of waste

On August 22, the Department of Customs of HCM City announced that there are 2,400 abandoned containers at Cat Lai Port since 2018.

These containers have caused many difficulties to the port's operation. The authorities have issued a notification to the firms but no one came.

In last May, Phuong Mai Industry Environment Company based in Quang Ninh Province imported several containers of garbage to Cat Lai. But two months later, they submitted a document to refuse to receive the containers without proper reasons.

Le Nguyen Ninh from Saigon port area 1 Customs Branch said not only the abandoned containers of garbage were hindering their operation, but they also posed pollution risks.

"Those abandoned containers already caused many problems and losses to us. Only when those containers are dealt with that we can deal with many more other containers. We are still waiting for the directives from the Ministry of Finance," he said.

Phuong Mai Industry Environment Company imported the containers of rubbish in order to sell to another company in HCM City for billions of VND.

However, the Phuong Mai Company has only had permission to import rubbish to produce. They are not allowed to sell the rubbish directly at the port.
