Ho Chi Minh City announced on April 1 that its average population growth rate during 2009-2019 is 2.15 percent per annum, which means the city has an addition of 170,000 people each year, equivalent to the population of a small district in the southern hub.

The city’s statistics showed that its total population as of January 23 reached nearly 8.86 million people, 64,800 people higher than the figure recorded on June 30 the previous year.

The population survey was carried out in more than 19,440 residential areas in the city, with total households of over 2.46 million.

A representative from the city’s statistics bureau, as the national population and housing census 2019 took place in a large scale and involved a number of sectors, social organisations and local residents, local authorities ordered competent agencies to promote communication campaign so that people from all walks of life gain a deeper insight into and join hands to ensure that the survey is carried out in a timely manner.

The census will investigate general population information, migration status, academic attainment level, technological specialisation, disability rate, marital status, birth and death rate, population growth, labour and occupation, residency and people’s basic living conditions.

The information will help to facilitate related research on Vietnam’s population and housing growth, and provide basic information for the assessment of the outcomes of socio-economic development plans from 2011 to 2020 and devise strategies for socio-economic development from 2021 to 2030.

The results of the 2019 census will also serve as a basis for initial assessment of implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDSs), which Vietnam has already committed to, as well as building statistical databases on population and serve as a source of information to support the updating of the national database.-VNA
