The HCMC Department of Industry and Trade this morning October 26 announced a project to manage and track pork origin in the city.
The project aims to enhance authorized agencies’ quality management and control over food production, processing and distribution.
Deputy director of the department Nguyen Ngoc Hoa said that the project has attracted 15 businesses and breeding establishments with nearly 1,000 farms, able to meet 100 percent consumption demand in HCMC.
In addition, it has been attended by 11 slaughter houses, two wholesale markets Binh Dien and Hoc Mon which account for 80 percent of pork output in the city, four retail markets including Ben Thanh, An Dong, Hoa Binh and Thai Binh.
Other attendees are five supermarket chains and 59 supermarkets comprising 34 Co.opMart supermarkets, 2 Satramart, 8 Big C, 2 Aeon and 13 AeonCitimart; four convenience store systems including 96 Co.opFood, 88 Satrafood, five Sagrifood and 49 Vissan stores.
The project’s management board has provided software applications for the attendees and consumers to identify pork producers and suppliers, and launched a website to introduce the two phase project to consumers and other businesses who want to join hand in tracking pork origin.
The first pilot phase will take place at the above registered places from December 10 this year and citywide from March 2 next year to manage pork origin from farms to slaughter houses, wholesale markets, supermarkets and markets.
The second phase will extend management from newborn piggy breeding until pork comes to consumers next year.
In the future, the city will apply similar projects to manage the origin of other farm produce including beef, poultry, vegetables and fruits.
