The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee approved a $437 million flood management project on May 10, including $400 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development under the World Bank and $37 million from the State budget.

The project will be implemented Go Vap, Binh Thanh, Tan Binh, Tan Phu, Binh Chanh and Binh Tan districts together with District 8 and District 12 to improve flood prevention capacity, environmental sanitation, and drainage.

Implementation will be conducted from 2016 to 2021, with the Center of Urban Flood Control Program (SCFC) being the investor.

Upon completion the project will protect 14,900 ha of land from flooding, help 2 million people access sanitation facilities and improve public sanitation.

The city currently has 31 points subject to severe regular flooding, such as Nguyen Van Qua, Kinh Duong Vuong, Me Coc, Nguyen Huu Canh and Pham Van Dong streets and the Hanoi Highway. SCFC has predicted that flooding in all of these points will have been addressed by 2018.  

In the 2016-2020 period, the SCFC said, the city needs VND97.3 trillion ($4.36 billion) for projects to prevent flooding and coping with rising sea levels, with VND23 trillion ($1 billion) already having been spent.
